My Rescue aka How James got Hit by a Car

So, today my friend and work colleague James got hit by a car. It seems the stereotype really is true about Chinese people being crappy drivers, because this makes the second person I know to have been hit by a car in less than three months. The secretary (Helen), aside from being launched through the air, and getting a sprained ankle, came off pretty light. James however, did not.

This time, I didn't witness it first hand, but here is the story. James was riding his motorcycle (more like a motorbike scoot hybrid) to work, went up to the main round about, and turned on. Now there is a stupidly positioned bush on an island and it makes oncoming traffic very hard to see. So he turned on not noticing the sedan flying along. The sedan also did not see James. As it has been snowing for the past three days, it makes braking quite difficult. So the car hit James and sent him flying over the car, where he face planted the pavement. Thankfully, he landed really well as it could of been much worse. I was still pretty damn bad though.

He broke his nose, and smashed his mouth. When I say smashed his mouth I really mean smashed. He literally broke his two front teeth almost clean off!

He then called me to come pick him up. I came to the rescue, although at the time forgetting in this country I'm next to useless. If you need a Taxi though, I'm your man. So I came with taxi, and took him to school, where Helen took him to the hospital.

Tomorrow he is getting new teeth put in. Apparently Yantai has world class Dentist, so that's a plus.He is in good spirits, seems he has a damn high pain threshold, although he's on meds at the moment. His only problem now is eating for the next few days. This probably wont be too big of an issue as he hates most Chinese and Korean food, but still that freaking sucks.

I had been trying to decide if Chinese drivers were actually pretty skilled, because they drive like led footed retards or if the just really suck... I have decided that they just plain shit at driving.

I thought of a joke that probably is in bad taste, while on the bus ride back from the company I sometimes teach at, and I will tell James tomorrow. Hopefully enough time has passed and he will think it's funny. Guess what he wants for Christmas... Maybe you don't get it but there's a Christmas song about wanting front teeth...

Seriously though, I joke because I care also, I can't process emotions like regular people. I hope your feeling a little better now James, you deserve a nice strong drink after today's incident.

I remember this guy I met at a TESOL course over five years ago who'd been to China to teach English and had been in a serious accident where he rolled his car and broke his jaw. Because he was in some rural town - and was the lone foreigner there - the "Mayor" or local Cadre or whatever actually came to his assisstance and helped him out with medical expsenses and stuff. I thought was pretty cool.

Yeah I think he might not have had right of way, possibly, when I got there they had been moved to the side of the road. James is not Chinese, but even if he didn't have right of way, it is impossible to tell thanks to the hedge that blocks your view, and it's probably both of their faults but still, the Chinese dude shouldn't be flying around a round about in the snow and ice. Either way I don't want to play the blame game. Though if you come to China, you will experience the insane shit that goes on when they drive.

As for the Phone a friend situation, Phoenix you got it in one.

That's crazy. Hope he recovers soon. From my reading of your description though, it seems James didn''t realize that he didn't have right of way? Is James Chinese? Or is it the Chinese who hit him that is the bad driver?

Bridget, I think for most ex-pats living in another country where they cannot speak the language (I'm assuming James is not Chinese and cannot speak Mandarin) they're more likely to phone a friend first. Even in Australia I'd probably get a friend or call a taxi before phoning for an ambulance. If you haven't got private health insurance it costs over $500 for an ambulance in Australia. People are often reluctant to call one because they don't want to be stuck with the bill.

I do not understand this dial a friend policy people have. The first people they call if they need emergency help is a family member or a friend - why not the ambulance? Then again, I have no idea what China's ambulance system is like so I am thinking that maybe you were the best option ... but if this was a car accident surely the ambos would of been called - with injuries ...

Hope to hear more in coming weeks as he mends ...
